How to Take Care of Your Teeth

If you’ve been having trouble with plaque buildup, gum disease, or tooth loss, you should get advice on how to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

When germs in your mouth build up, they can make acids that damage the enamel and lead to cavities. Tooth decay can be stopped by brushing and flossing your teeth the right way. If you don’t, a hole may form and cause damage. Plaque that builds up along the gums can also cause gum disease.

Tips on how to brush your teeth

We suggest that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, but don’t brush too much. This can happen at night before you go to bed and once more during the day, usually when you wake up in the morning.

Fluoride toothpaste is the best way to keep your teeth clean and stop plaque, a film of germs that coats your teeth, from building up. We’ll talk more about this later. So, make sure you brush all of your teeth in a circle.

Which is better: an electric toothbrush or a hand-held one?

Neither hand or electric toothbrushes are better than the other. It all depends on how you use them. Just make sure to brush all of your teeth and use toothpaste with fluoride. But an electric toothbrush can make it easier to clean your teeth thoroughly because it moves in a circle to make sure your teeth are spotless.

Between-Teeth Brushes

Interdental brushes, or brushes with a single bristle, are also great for keeping your teeth clean, especially if you have spaces between your teeth. They’re better than toothpicks for getting food out of your teeth, so don’t use them. They can damage your gums and cause illness.

How to Choose a Toothbrush

When looking for a toothbrush for yourself or your child, it’s important to think about the different kinds that work best.

For adults, small, compact brushes with soft, bent bristles that are both long and short and have round ends work best.

If you prefer electric toothbrushes, the best ones have rotating heads that can clean your teeth better than hand toothbrushes. Even so, everything is fine as long as you use a manual toothbrush correctly and brush your teeth twice a day. Change your toothbrush every three to four months.

If you don’t know which toothbrush is best for keeping your teeth clean, you can ask your doctor.

Toothpaste Type

To keep your teeth clean, you must use the right toothpaste with the right amount of fluoride. This information is easy to find on the box of the product.

  • 1350 ppm fluoride is the suggested amount of fluoride for adults.
  • Children over the age of three can use the same quantity of fluoride in their toothpaste as long as it isn’t more than 1,500 ppm.
  • Children under 6 can use a lower strength as long as it has at least 1,000 ppm fluoride and they don’t have cavities.
  • Children under the age of 3 should only use a small amount of toothpaste, while kids between the ages of 3 and 6 should use a pea-sized amount.

If you don’t know how much fluoride is right for you or your child, ask your doctor.

How to Brush Your Teeth

  • Don’t forget to floss! Use this to clean between your teeth, where your toothbrush might not be able to reach, to get rid of plaque or food that’s stuck there. Just remember to rinse afterward.
  • You should brush your teeth twice a day, in the morning and, if possible, before bed. If you have a manual toothbrush, you should gently brush all the areas of your teeth in a circle. Using an electric toothbrush should do most of the work for you. Small movements back and forth are also important.
  • Plaque can also build up along the gum line, so brush gently there as well.
  • You can also keep your mouth clean by lightly brushing your tongue.
  • After you brush, spit it out, but don’t rinse. If you do, the fluoride won’t be able to clean your teeth.

When brushing a child’s teeth, the steps are a little different

Make sure to start brushing as soon as your child gets his or her first tooth. It’s important to brush your child’s tooth or teeth or watch them while they do it.

Make sure your child’s teeth are brushed twice a day for two minutes with the right amount of fluoride. The best times are before bedtime and one other time during the day.

Make sure that children under 3 only get a small amount of toothpaste.

After brushing, your child should spit out the toothpaste, but they shouldn’t rinse. If they do, the fluoride won’t be able to clean their teeth.

Should I brush my teeth and use mouthwash?

Mouthwash is great for keeping your teeth clean and can help you avoid problems with your teeth that could have been avoided. Don’t use it right after brushing your teeth, though, because it will take the fluoride out of your toothpaste. Try not to use it at the same time every day, and don’t eat or drink for 30 minutes after you do.

Even though brushing can help you get rid of food stuck between your teeth, it can also help you in many other ways. For example, getting rid of the plaque that can build up at the gum line can help prevent gum disease and bad breath. It’s best to floss before you brush your teeth. Take 30 to 45 cm of floss and slide it up and down between your teeth and lips as far as it will go to get rid of food and plaque.
