Here are some things to think about as you start your journey through pregnancy:
- Let’s be honest: being pregnant can be tiring. Even though you’re probably tired at the end of each day, try not to stop brushing your teeth before bed. If you do this for a few weeks or months, cavities and plaque can form. Also, bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream and move to the uterus.
- Have you ever heard of gingivitis during pregnancy? It’s caused by changes in hormones in the body, which can make the gums red and bleed. If your gums are inflamed, you should come see us before it gets worse, because it can be stopped in its tracks.

- When possible, choose non-chewable prenatal pills or supplements. Most chewable vitamins have sugar in them, which can stick to your teeth if you don’t brush them right away. It’s easy to see how this could cause problems in your mouth if you took it before bed and after brushing your teeth.
- Many women often feel sick in the morning. When this happens, stomach acid can get into the mouth and stick to tooth enamel, making it weaker. This can lead to tooth decay.
