How does Toothpaste clean?

We all do it every morning and every night: we brush our teeth.

But what actually makes our teeth clean? Is toothpaste just a sweet gel that keeps us from getting cavities?

So, sort of. But it’s not quite as simple as that.

Let’s look at some of the things that most toothpastes have in them and what they do to clean our teeth

  1. Fluoride: Fluoride is found in a lot of toothpastes on the market today. Fluoride helps keep our teeth from getting cavities and makes our enamel stronger against the acids that bacteria make.
  2. Detergents: These things help make the “foam” that you may be used to seeing when you brush your teeth. Foam helps get things out of your teeth that might be stuck, and it also feels good in your mouth. Sodium lauryl sulphate is the most popular type of detergent.
  3. Abrasives: These ingredients can help get rid of spots and plaque, but they should always be gentle enough not to hurt your teeth or gums. If you look at the ingredients on the back of your toothpaste tube, you might see calcium carbonate and silica. These are abrasives.
  4. Thickeners: Have you ever wondered why some toothpastes are so thick and stay on your toothbrush when you squeeze them? This is because thickeners make it so. Thickeners, like cellulose gum, give the paste a different feel.
