OPGs are a great way to find out what’s wrong with teeth that don’t look right, cysts, tumours, and infections. A lateral cephalogram takes a picture of the face, jaws, and soft tissues from the side. This allows the dentist to see how the teeth and jaws fit together, as well as how the soft tissues fit with the teeth and jaws.
To make the images, a special kind of x-ray machine is used. During an OPG exam, a piece of equipment will rotate around the patient’s head while they stay still and stand or sit.
For the OPG, the people who work in medical imaging will ask you to sit on a chair or stand up. If you have trouble sitting or standing without help, you should let the staff know. The radiographer may cover the parts of your body that aren’t being X-rayed with a shield or ask you to wear an apron.
When you are ready, the radiologist will go behind a screen to start the OPG machine. During the OPG, they will ask you to stay still. When your OPG is done, you will be asked to wait while the radiographer checks the pictures. Including the time it takes to get ready, the process usually takes about 5 minutes.
