What Your Teeth Say About Your Health

Poor oral health is a big problem in and of itself because problems like damaged tooth nerves and gum disease can be very painful.

A bad mouth can also be a sign that something else is wrong with your body. Most of the time, the following tooth problems are signs of a bigger health problem:

Teeth Breaks

Over time, enamel gets less strong. The enamel on your teeth doesn’t grow back, and you use your teeth a lot. So it makes sense that there will be some wear and tear.

But if your enamel wears down so much that your teeth crack, that’s more than normal wear and tear. That should not be how weak enamel is.

Acid reflux, or gastric reflux disease, can cause weak enamel and cracks in the teeth. When you have GERD, acid from your stomach moves up into your esophagus. This acid can get into your mouth and hurt your teeth.

If you have cracked teeth and other symptoms like dry mouth and heartburn, it’s possible that you have GERD.

Worn teeth Teeth that have been worn down flat over time are a sign that you grind your teeth. You might already know this if you grind your teeth often during the day, but a lot of people grind their teeth at night while they sleep and don’t even realize it.

Whether you grind your teeth while you’re awake or asleep, it’s usually because you’re under a lot of stress.

Painful Wounds

It’s normal to get a mouth sore once in a while. Teeth are hard and sharp, and as you talk and eat throughout the day, there’s always a chance you’ll bite yourself and get a sore.

It’s not normal, though, to have a sore that won’t heal. This could mean that you have cancer in your mouth. If you have a sore in your mouth that seems to be getting worse, you should make an appointment with your dentist right away for a cancer test.

Webbing in white

If you look into your mouth while brushing your teeth, flossing, or doing anything else and you see lacy white stuff on your cheeks, you might have lichen planus.

A skin disease called lichen planus affects 0.1% of men and 0.3% of women. No one knows what causes lichen planus, and there is no known cure, but the symptoms are usually not too bad.

Dirty false teeth

Even your false teeth can tell a lot about how healthy you are as a whole.

The elderly are more likely to die from aspiration pneumonia if they leave their dentures in overnight. This is one reason why dental implants are usually thought to be a better way to replace lost teeth than dentures.

When dentures aren’t cleaned properly, they can bring dangerous debris into a person’s mouth. This debris can then be sucked into the lungs while the person sleeps and cause serious, life-threatening inflammation.

When you put your dentures in your mouth, they shouldn’t be sticky. Make sure you use a good cleaning solution and clean them well.
