When you come to see us, we’ll try to figure out what’s making you hurt. Most of the time, it’s one of these:
- Bad teeth. This is the main reason why teeth hurt. When the enamel on your teeth wears away, your teeth may become more sensitive to hot and cold weather, which can cause sudden pain. Tooth decay can also result in cavities.
- A disease. When germs get into your tooth, usually through a crack, chip, or cavity, it can cause an infection. If you don’t take good care of your teeth every day, you may develop a tooth problem.
- Grind your teeth. Do you ever get a headache or a sore jaw when you wake up? You could be grinding your teeth at night. When you sleep, clenching your jaw so hard for hours on end can hurt your teeth. When you come see us, we’ll look at your teeth and bite to see if there are signs that you grind your teeth.
- an odd bite. If your bite isn’t even, it can put extra stress on your jaw muscles and make your teeth and mouth hurt. This can sometimes even lead to TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder.
- when a child’s teeth come in. If you have babies or kids in school, you probably know how painful it can be when a tooth comes in. Most babies do this around the age of six months. Around the age of six or seven, children will start to lose their baby teeth.
