Dental problems can be painful and stressful, and they can happen at any time. Knowing how to handle them can make a big difference in how they turn out. We see many different kinds of problems every day in the office, so we thought it would be helpful to tell you about some of the most common reasons why they happen.
Toothache: There are many things that can cause a toothache, such as a cavity, an illness, or an injury. You can ease the pain by rinsing your mouth with warm water, removing any stuck food with tooth floss, and taking over-the-counter pain medicine. If the pain doesn’t go away, you should come see us.

Chipped or Broken Tooth: If you chip or break a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and put a cold compress on the area to prevent swelling. Take over-the-counter pain medicine if the tooth hurts. If the tooth is broken, it might be possible to fix it. If the tooth is broken, it may need to be pulled out or have root canal treatment.
Lost Filling or Crown: If you lose a filling or crown, try to find the missing piece and bring it with you to your dental visit. We may be able to reattach it. You can briefly seal the tooth with dental cement, or you can buy over-the-counter or sugar-free gum.

Knocked-Out Tooth: If you lose a tooth, look for it and hold it by the crown (the white part) instead of the root. Try to clean the tooth with water and put it back in the hole. If you can’t do that, put the tooth in a cup of milk or water and come see us as soon as you can. This will give us the best chance of keeping the tooth.
Soft Tissue Injury: If you bite your tongue, lip, or cheek, rinse your mouth with warm water and put a cold compress on the area to prevent swelling. Go to the hospital if the blood doesn’t stop.
