Gum Graft Surgery in Dubai

If your dentist thinks you need gum grafting, they will send you to a periodontist to get checked out. Your periodontist will measure the spaces around your teeth and check the health of your gums. They’ll also look at the gums around each tooth to see how much they have worn down.

Your periodontist may want to watch the recession depending on how bad your condition is. Or, they may suggest that you have gum graft surgery. During your consultation, your periodontist will talk to you in depth about your treatment options.

There are many ways and things that can be used to graft gums. Most of the time, periodontists move tissue from your palate (the roof of your mouth) to the area where your gums are receding. In some cases, though, they may use a different grafting material, which they can buy from a licenced bone and tissue bank.

Your periodontist will do the following during a gum graft surgery:

1. Give you anaesthesia in the area. This makes your gums and teeth in that area feel numb. For your comfort, many periodontists also offer sedation dentistry, such as nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and sedation through an IV. During your first visit, be sure to ask what your options are.
2. Get the site ready. Once you are relaxed, your periodontist will make a cut in your gums and make a small flap. They will also clean your teeth roots very well.
3. Get the graft of gum. Then, your doctor makes another cut on the roof of your mouth and cuts out a small piece of tissue from the inside. The top layer is still there. They will use sutures or a periodontal dressing to close the wound. (Your doctor will skip this step if they decide to use donated tissue.)
4. Put the gum graft in place. Next, your doctor will put the gum graft over the exposed roots of your teeth (the area of recession).
5. Place sutures. Finally, your gum tissue is moved back into place and stitched back together. Your periodontist might use stitches that come out on their own. Or, you may need to have them taken out at your next appointment.

The answer depends on how many teeth have receding gums. If you only need one gum graft, the process usually takes about an hour. It could take longer if you need more than one graft in different parts of your mouth.

During your gum graft surgery, you’ll be put to sleep, so you won’t feel anything. You might feel a little bit sore after your procedure, but your periodontist will give you painkillers and post-op instructions to help you feel better.

After a gum graft, you’ll probably have gauze and a dressing on your gums. Most of the time, you can take off the gauze after 30 minutes. During the first few days, the dressing may fall off on its own, or your doctor may take it off at your next appointment. Your doctor will keep an eye on you until you’re well enough to go home. If you were sedated during your procedure, a trusted friend or family member will need to drive you home.

Your periodontist will give you detailed instructions for what to do after surgery. You should do these things very carefully to avoid pain and infection.

After a week, your doctor will probably want to check on your gum graft. After that, you’ll have regular checkups until your periodontist sends you back to your regular dentist to continue care.
During this time, they will tell you exactly what to do. In general, you can expect the following:

The first day

After your surgery, you will have some bleeding, swelling, and pain. To deal with these side effects, take all of your medicines exactly as your surgeon tells you to. Get a lot of rest and don’t do anything too hard.

Eat foods that are soft and cool, like yoghurt, pudding, and smoothies.

Use an antibacterial mouthwash to keep the area around the surgery clean. Don’t brush or floss the gum graft directly, as this can hurt it and cause it to fail. (You can floss and brush your other teeth as much as you feel comfortable with.)

The first week

In the first 24 to 48 hours, the bleeding should stop. Three to four days will pass before the swelling goes away. During this time, you may also get bumps. These are normal side effects that should go away in about a week. Keep taking all your medicines as directed.

As you get better, you can eat more soft foods like eggs, pasta, fish, and cooked vegetables.

Brush your teeth gently near where you had surgery, but don’t brush your gums. Don’t brush or floss around the gum graft until your surgeon says it’s okay.

The second week

The swelling and bruises should start to go away, and your level of comfort should keep getting better. Ask your doctor when you can start taking less of your medicine.

As your level of comfort grows, you can add more solid foods. Still, you shouldn’t eat anything hard, crunchy, or spicy until your doctor says it’s okay.

Once your surgeon says it’s okay, you can go back to brushing and flossing your teeth normally.
